Feisty Ferret Cage Customization
Because I myself use Feisty Ferret cages for my herd I have a lot of experience customizing them to be chinchilla safe. Chinchillas have small feet and they are big fans of running and jumping around their cage. The wide gauge on the wire floors of this cage are very dangerous for chinchillas because they can break their legs! Here are cheap and easy modifications to make your cage safe so that you can have a good experience with your chinchilla and avoid unnecessary injury!
1 - Add bottom level as described on instructions.
2 - Place plastic pan ON TOP of the bottom wire rack (inside of the cage). Optional, to reduce any impact noise from the metal under the pan when they jump around the cage you can place a piece of fleece fabric underneath the plastic pan. Why fleece? 3 - Also optional but greatly reduces mess if you add pine shavings. Add cured PINE boards around the bottom of the cage. It's readily available at most hardware stores. For this I used pieces that were 2" x 3/8", cut to length, drilled two holes per board and attached using bolts with round heads, washers and wing nuts. 4 - For the bottom you can either use pine shavings or another fleece liner. Pine shavings are easily vacuumed out with a shop vac making cleaning a breeze! Fleece can be quickly removed, shaken out, and washed/dried. 5 - If you keep the second level in the cage you will want to cover it with a fleece liner. Avoid using materials with threads they can ingest. You may also want to consider making fleece liners for the included shelving and ramps if your pet is prone to chewing plastic. I typically leave the second level out and add wooden shelving instead of the included ones for chinchillas. |
